Bell's Palsy is a form of peripheral neuropathy. It is a disorder involving
sudden facial drooping and decreased facial movement. Bell's Palsy is caused by
damage to cranial nerve VII. The cause of the damage is unknown, although
it can be associated with inflammation of the facial nerve where it travels through
the bones of the skull. It may also be caused by tumor, hypertension or head injury.
The symptoms of Bell's Palsy may include: face pulled to one side, facial paralysis,
difficulty with eating/drinking, pain
behind or in front of the ear, impairment of taste, sound sensitivity, headache,
facial stiffness, and difficulty with facial expressions.
Bell's Palsy: Does EMS or TENS work?
EMS or electrical muscle stimulation works by stimulating muscles
using tiny electric impulses. These impulses travel to the body from the EMS unit
via electrode pads which are attached to the body. Timers on the EMS machine rhythmically
contract and relax the muscles, allowing you to tone or work muscles, whilst resting,
watching TV, reading, etc.
Body Clock EMS units are excellent for treating Bell's Palsy and are used
by patients all over the world.
Body Clock EMS units are ideal if you suffer from:
Long-term disuse after fracture or prolongedbedrest.
Progressive strengthening for joint or muscle injury
Improving muscle tone after weight loss or childbirth
Muscle spasticity following a stroke
TENS
or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation is a non-invasive, drug-free method
of pain relief. Pads are placed on or near the area of pain. TENS uses soothing
pulses that are sent via the pads through the skin and along the nerve fibres.
The pulses suppress pain signals to the brain. TENS also encourages the body to
produce higher levels of its own natural pain killing chemicals called Endorphins
and Encephalins.
